What weighs two and one half grams, is
lighter than a feather and likes to
drink Gatorade? A butterfly of course!
Once again, more than 1500 butterflies
are coming this May 6-11 2008 to the
Greater
Plano Kiwanis Club 7th Annual Butterfly
Festival. |
|
Visitors,
young and old alike, walk freely through
a conservatory lined with a kaleidoscope
of colors from flowering plants, water
fountains and butterflies of every shape
and size. Butterflies alight on a shirt,
a finger or a nose as they express
curiosity of the own. Just for our
pre-scheduled groups, Dan and Kay of
Greathouse Butterfly Farm will present a
special class. The students will
encounter special boxes that house
cocoons; revealing the metamorphosis
from larvae into adult butterflies.
Where do they come from, how long do
they live, what do they eat, how do they
taste or smell? All these questions from
inquiring young minds will be answered.
Without realizing it, children eagerly
absorb educational information away from
the classroom setting. |

The Butterfly Festival proceeds go back
into our community addressing the needs
of children. The Greater Plano Kiwanis
Children's Charities range from baby
food and formula for the Plano Food
Pantry to scholarships to local high
school graduating seniors and Collin
County Community College students. Also
supported are the Children's Miracle
Network and the Plano Children's Medical
Clinic that meets children's medical
needs. Library books, wheelchairs,
children's shoes, and toiletries are
just a few of the donated items. Our
past events raised over $48,000 for
these and numerous other charities. |
